Standardised symbols

Most marks in this building mean something because people agree they do. These mean something because a law says so — and the law names the shape, the symbol and the colours, in that order.

The finding is an absence. Not one of the nine carries a colour value, because there is none to carry. The binding text specifies a black symbol on a white background with a red frame sufficiently wide to be clearly visible — colour by name, with no Pantone, no NCS, no Munsell, no hex anywhere. GHS mandates colour roles. ISO 3864 mandates colour values. A register that printed both alike would misrepresent both.

This is the first tranche: the nine GHS hazard pictograms. The wider roster — ISO 7010 safety signs, ISO 7001 public information, IEC 60417 equipment markings, the Vienna Convention road signs — is not here yet, and the reason is worth stating: those standards are paywalled, and the honest output for a text nobody can read is a null, not a guess.

These drawings are the Institute’s own. Nothing here is traced or embedded: each mark was constructed from the description this register already carries, the same practice as the signal flags, which are drawn from blazon alone and never from a chart. It is why description is a required field on this dataset — a description good enough to redraw from is worth more than a link to artwork somebody else controls.

The frame is a different matter. A square set at a point, a red border and a white ground are specified in the regulation’s own text, so the frame is reproduced rather than interpreted — and it is the finding, because that text names three colours and gives a value for none of them.
