Pattern
markings on a surface; then writing; then civilisation
文 begins as crossing strokes — veining, grain, the markings on a hide or a body. From there it becomes the written character, then literature, then culture and civility itself, in compounds still in daily use: 文化 culture, 文明 civilisation. The whole argument of this institute is contained in that drift, in order: a mark, then a system of marks, then the entire body of what a people has made and can hand on. Classical usage sets it against 武, the martial, so 文 also carries civil as opposed to military — the scholar against the soldier. A word that starts as decoration on a surface and finishes as the name for everything that is not violence.
