Emoji

The newest mass symbol system — governed, versioned and updated yearly by committee, like a living script. The first writing system in centuries to be designed in public, in real time.

Grammar
Genuine combinatorics: zero-width joiner sequences fuse existing emoji into a new single glyph, skin-tone modifiers inflect them, and variation selectors switch a character between text and emoji presentation. Meaning here is composed from parts, not only added to a list.
Governance
The most explicitly governed system on this page — the Unicode Consortium’s Emoji Subcommittee, a public proposal process with stated criteria, and a dated annual release. Every addition leaves a paper trail, which makes this the rare symbol system with a legislative record.

§Its members

Twenty-four of roughly four thousand. This is a sample, not the set — the department shows a system’s grammar, and no page could usefully print every emoji. The collection below carries what fifty languages call a selection of them.
